Shipping containers are designed and built to withstand 180 mph winds without flexing. You just have to design a way to keep it attached firmly to the ground with those wind speeds. Looks like the container wall panels are made from steel .064" (1/16" thick). Roof panels are made from .080" thick steel.

the problem with shipping containers is the accordian style sides look strong, and they are if the load is only pushing straight down, same with the roof, strong if pushing from the sides. burying them puts the stress on the wrong angles and you would be surprised how easy they bend if you push on the sides. i use these containers at work and ...

Until this post I had not seen any that suggest reinforcing them, a lot saying you can buy a container for ~$1000 and bury it. Which is almost a certain suicide. If you plan to reinforce it, good. But the purpose behind most people having the idea is a cheap/fast solution with minimal work.

However, the contents probably wouldn't fare very well unless you had some kind of diluge system to keep the container cool.

For myself and my family, I used a 20 ft shipping container as my base structure. I dug 6 post holes (3ft deep) then used Mobile Home screw type 4ft anchors down another 3 feet. Topped that with regular strength concrete for extra mass. Then I got 6 inches of "Road Base" rock over the entire site for good drainage.

A concrete block bunker is much better in my opinion for various reasons that I will outline. A shipping container is an awkward size, a rectangle. If you only plan on having a 1 shipping container bunker, your size is seriously impacted once you add stairs going down into the bunker. If you are smart, you would probably add a ladder with a ...

Shipping containers are overrated for just about everything. They have their place though, as a cheap above ground sheds/shelters that can be placed and secured quickly. As others have stated, helicopters are expensive and this negates any advantage the shipping container would have and moves it into the undesirable category for storage and ...

Thanks! Check your local industrial area, especially any electronic manufacturing facilities, chances are they use isopropal alcohol and receive it in 55 gallon drums. Theses drums are usually picked up by the local trash company for recycling, but you could probably get them for free. I got two of them that way.

Push it back into a cavity enough to hide 'most' of it, filling the sides back in with dirt, and enough dirt (1-2") on top to get grass seed started or roll some sod on. First roll on some 50# tar paper.
