This is an incomplete list of statutory codes from the U.S. states, territories, and the one federal district. Most states use a single official code divided into numbered titles. Pennsylvania's official codification is still in progress.
The law of most of the states is based on the common law of England; the notable exception is Louisiana, whose civil law is largely based upon French and Spanish law.The passage of time has led to state courts and legislatures expanding, overruling, or modifying the common law; as a result, the laws of any given state invariably differ from the laws of its sister states.
This is a list of United States state legislatures. Each state in the United States has a legislature as part of its form of civil government . Most of the fundamental details of the legislature are specified in the state constitution .
Volumes 1 through 18, which have all the statutes passed from 1789 to 1875, are available on-line at the Library of Congress, here. In the list below, statutes are listed by X Stat. Y , where X is the volume of the Statutes at Large and Y is the page number, as well as either the chapter or Public Law number.
The United States of America is a federal republic [1] consisting of 50 states, a federal district (Washington, D.C., the capital city of the United States), five major territories, and various minor islands. [2] [3] Both the states and the United States as a whole are each sovereign jurisdictions. [4]
The primary function of any legislature is to create laws. State legislatures also approve budget for state government. They may establish government agencies, set their policies, and approve their budgets. For instance, a state legislature could establish an agency to manage environmental conservation efforts within that state.
