Proven oil reserves are those quantities of petroleum which, by analysis of geological and engineering data, can be estimated, with a high degree of confidence, to be commercially recoverable from a given date forward from known reservoirs and under current economic conditions.

Sources that consider Russia in possession of the world's largest proven reserves include the US CIA (47,600 cubic kilometers), [ 2 ] the US Energy Information Administration (EIA) (49,000 km 3 ), [ 3 ] and OPEC (48,810 km 3 ). The proven oil reserves in Venezuela are recognized as the largest in the world, totaling 300 billion barrels (4.8 × 10 10 m 3) as of 1 January 2014. [1] The 2019 edition of the BP Statistical Review of World Energy reports the total proved reserves of 303.3 billion barrels for Venezuela (slightly more than Saudi Arabia's 297.7 billion barrels ).
