Garrison Dam is located between Riverdale and Pick City, and named after the town of Garrison, directly north of the dam, across the reservoir. The dam is approximately midway between Bismarck and Minot , about 10 miles (16 km) west of U.S. Highway 83 .

The park was originally developed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers as Garrison Lake State Park. [4] The North Dakota Parks and Recreation Department assumed management in 1965, then expanded the park, renaming it Lake Sakakawea State Park in 1973.
