The 4F27E is an electronically controlled 4-speed automatic transaxle transmission developed by Mazda and Ford. Mazda's FS5A-EL (Ford FNR5) is the 5-speed successor to this transmission which shares many of the same parts.
The Mazda3 is based on the Ford global C1 platform, shared with the latest European Ford Focus and Volvo S40.Previewed by the MX-Sportif concept car, the first-generation Mazda3 was available in two body styles, a four-door fastback sedan/saloon, marketed as a "4-door coupé style" in Europe, and a five-door hatchback, branded the Sport version in Canada, Japan, and the United States.
The first Nissan/Jatco transmission, the Jatco 3N71 transmission, used a simple naming scheme: the "3" meant "3-speed", and the remainder was the series number. Beginning in 1982, it gained a locking torque converter (L3N71b) for greater efficiency. (See L3N71 link below).
Mazda offered two trim levels with the Mazdaspeed3. The Grand Touring model (pictured) has few outwardly visible differences from the Mazdaspeed3 Sport but includes leather and lycra weave logo-embroidered racing seats, Bose stereo with 6-CD in-dash changer, automatic Xenon headlamps with manual leveling control, LED tail lights (the main visible difference), and rain-sensing windshield wipers.

To increase durability of the bore, Mazda uses cast iron for the cylinder liners. This offers enhanced high-heat tolerance as well as reduced friction. The increased stroke of 100 mm (3.94 in), up from 94 mm (3.70 in) of the L3, allows a taller (numerically lower) final-drive ratio resulting in lower-rpm while cruising to increase fuel economy.
