The counties of Ireland (Irish: Contaetha na hÉireann) are historic administrative divisions of the island.They began as Norman structures, and as the powers exercised by the Cambro-Norman barons and the Old English nobility waned over time, new offices of political control came to be established at a county level.

A Topographical Dictionary of Ireland, comprising two volumes plus atlas published in 1837 by Samuel Lewis, was a similar work on a smaller scale, which undermined the case for a publicly funded memoir. The decennial census of 1841 also rendered redundant much of the basic statistical information in the memoirs. Work ceased in 1840.
