New Kent County was established in 1654 from York County, Virginia. In 1642, it was renamed Northampton County. However, in 1663, Northampton County was divided into two counties.
The school became a K-7 school in 1993 with the moving of eighth and ninth grade students to Carroll County Intermediate School in Hillsville, Virginia.
