U.S. Route 421 Business (US 421 Bus) is a 9.9-mile (15.9 km) multi-lane business loop along Horner Boulevard, through downtown Sanford.Approved by AASHTO on May 3, 2013, its official establishment is dependent on the completion of the Sanford bypass, which mainline US 421 will be rerouted along, sharing with already established NC 87 Bypass.

It took 15 years to build the section of I-40 that connects North Carolina and Tennessee. The highway snakes alongside the Pigeon River, perched on a shelf blasted from the side of the mountains.
