The Germantown Colony and Museum is a museum and historical preservation project in Webster Parish, Louisiana about 7 miles (11 km) north of Minden in northwestern Louisiana, USA. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places as Germantown in 1979. Germantown was the earliest religious communal settlement in Louisiana.
By 1852, Southdown was home to 233 slaves, most of whom lived in family units on the property. [7] The second plantation house was built by Mr. Minor in 1858, and was named for a breed of sheep that the family raised. [5] The house was built of hand-fired brick and wood from local cypress and pine trees. [8]
The U.S. Congress passed a bill to relocate the Gillis W. Long Hansen's Disease (Leprosy) Center to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and as of 1999 the National Hansen's Disease Programs continues its clinical care and research for Hansen's disease in Baton Rouge. [8] The Federal Government returned the site to the State of Louisiana in 1999.
This organized the state into seven judicial districts, each consisting of groups of parishes. In 1816, the first official map of the state used the term parish, as did the 1845 constitution. Since then, the official term for Louisiana's primary civil divisions has been parishes. The 19 original parishes were joined by Catahoula Parish in 1808.
