Jay Carter Hartzell is an American economist. He served as the 30th President of the University of Texas at Austin from 2020 until February 19, 2025. While he was set to leave this position at the end of the 2024-25 academic year to become the 11th President of Southern Methodist University, UT Austin announced an interim President, James Davis, sooner than expected.
