From 1947 to 1974, NHS services in Sussex were managed by the South-East Metropolitan Regional Hospital Board. In 1965 a new board was formed for Wessex which also covered Dorset apart from Lyme Regis. In 1974 the boards were abolished and replaced by regional health authorities (RHAs). East Sussex came under the South East Thames RHA.

The South East Coast Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust (SECAmb) is the NHS ambulance services trust for south-eastern England, covering Kent (including Medway), Surrey, West Sussex and East Sussex (including Brighton and Hove). It also covers a part of north-eastern Hampshire around Aldershot, Farnborough, Fleet and Yateley.
The trust was established as East Sussex Hospitals NHS Trust on 1 April 2002, taking its current name on 13 May 2011. [3] [4] In 2021 the trust bought the private hospital Spire Sussex Hospital, which is physically linked to the trust's Conquest Hospital in Hastings. It has 22 beds and two operating theatres and 129 employees.
