The Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle is a suffragan Latin Church diocese of the Archdiocese of Sydney, established in 1847 initially as the Diocese of Maitland and changed to the current name in 1995. The diocese covers the Hunter and Mid North Coast regions of New South Wales in Australia. The bishop of the diocese is Michael Kennedy.
The ground on which Christ Church Cathedral stands has been the site of at least one other church: Christ Church, built in 1817–18. Unlike the rushed construction of Christ Church, the building of Christ Church Cathedral was a long and complicated process; it was exactly one hundred years from the beginning of construction to its consecration.
The petition also requested the diocese be renamed the Catholic Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle. Previously it had been named the Diocese of Maitland. On 14 June 1995, by Papal Brief, the Catholic Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle was created and on 16 July 1995, the Sacred Heart Church in Hamilton became the Sacred Heart Cathedral.
Michael Robert Kennedy (born 13 May 1968) is an Australian prelate of the Catholic Church who was appointed bishop of the Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle in February 2023. He was bishop of Armidale from 2012 to 2023.
He has served as the bishop of the Diocese of Newcastle since 2 February 2018. He previously served as an assistant bishop in the diocese from 2009 to 2018.
