The history of modern medical education in Nepal is very short. Formal medical education started in Nepal after the establishment of Institute of Medicine, Nepal in 1972 under Tribhuvan University. [4] Previously, only few qualified doctors were present in Nepal before the pre-democracy era of 1951.

NMC was established in 1964 under Nepal Medical Council Act 1964. Chairman of NMC is nominated by Government of Nepal whereas Vice-Chairman is elected from NMC members. [5] NMC is one of many statutory bodies related to Healthcare in Nepal. It mainly deals with code and conduct of medical doctors registered in this council.
The Institute of Medicine (IOM) is one of the five technical institutes under Nepal's Tribhuvan University. [2] IOM offers undergraduate, postgraduate and Ph.D. programs. The institute has eight constituent campuses and fifteen affiliated colleges in Nepal. Its central campus is Maharajgunj Medical Campus in Kathmandu. [3]
