The gunman, 37-year-old Edward Charles Allaway, was a custodian at the university's library. The center opened in July 2011 and is in Orange County, California. [1] The Cooper Center was named to commemorate Dr. John D. Cooper, professor emeritus of geological science at Cal State Fullerton, who campaigned for the conservation of the Orange County Collection, and died in 2007. [2] [3]
The purpose of the center is to provide opportunities to conduct research, receive instruction and experience the Mojave Desert environment. It is officially operated by the California Desert Studies Consortium, a consortium of seven CSU campuses: Dominguez Hills, Fullerton, Long Beach, Los Angeles, Northridge, San Bernardino and Cal Poly Pomona.
