Vitis rotundifolia, or muscadine, [1] is a grapevine species native to the southeastern and south-central United States. [2] The growth range extends from Florida to New Jersey coast, and west to eastern Texas and Oklahoma. [3]
The Florida Wine Grape Growers Association (FWGGA) was established in 1923. In the 1930s, researchers at the University of Florida helped develop new hybrid grape varieties from the indigenous Muscadine to be more ecologically suitable for Florida's climate, including Blanc du Bois , Stover , Swanee , Daytona , Orlando Seedless and Miss Blanc .
Blanc du Bois (French, white [grape] of the woods [forest]) is an American hybrid grape that was created in 1968 by John A. Mortensen at the University of Florida’s Central Florida Research and Education Center in Leesburg, Florida.
The fruit is a berry, known as a grape that is ovoid or globular, dark blue or greenish, usually 2-locular with 5 seeds; in the wild species it is 6 mm (0.24 in) diameter and ripens dark purple to blackish with a pale wax bloom; in cultivated plants it is usually much larger, up to 3 cm (1.2 in) long, and can be green, red, or purple (black).
Catawba is a red American grape variety used for wine as well as juice, jams and jellies.Grown predominantly on the East Coast of the United States, this purplish-red grape is a likely a hybrid of the native American Vitis labrusca and the Vitis vinifera cultivar Semillon.
This list of grape varieties includes cultivated grapes, whether used for wine, or eating as a table grape, fresh or dried (raisin, currant, sultana). For a complete list of all grape species, including those unimportant to agriculture, see Vitis.
