Juris Doctor diploma conferred by Columbia Law School. A Juris Doctor, Doctor of Jurisprudence, [1] or Doctor of Law [2] (JD) is a graduate-entry professional degree that primarily prepares individuals to practice law. In the United States, it is the only qualifying law degree.
It is the degree usually required to practice law in the United States, and the final degree obtained by most practitioners in the field. Juris Doctor programs at law schools are usually three-year programs if done full-time, or four-year programs if done via evening classes. Some U.S. law schools include an Accelerated JD program.
Law schools in this list are categorized by whether they are currently active or closed; within each section they are listed in alphabetical order by state, then name. Most of these law schools grant the Juris Doctor degree, commonly abbreviated JD, which is the typical first professional degree in law in the United States.
The Levin College of Law offers a three-year, full-time program leading to a Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree. It also offers advanced law degrees, including Master of Laws (LL.M.) degree programs in taxation and international taxation, in addition to a Doctor of Juridical Science (S.J.D.) in taxation.
The School of Law offers the Juris Doctor degree through a full-time program. On February 5, 2024, SIU announced the School of Law had received a $10 million gift from John and Jayne Simmons, and would be renamed Simmons Law School, pending Board of Trustees approval.
The first law degree was known until recently as the Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.). However, since law schools in Canada generally insist on a prior degree or some equivalent in order to grant admission, it was a more advanced degree than the LL.B. degrees awarded by programs abroad, which would accept high school graduates.
