The Chattahoochee River is a stocked trout stream [3] with 23 species of game fish. Year-round fishing is available with a Georgia fishing license and a trout stamp. In 2012, the Chattahoochee National Recreation Area was designated as the Chattahoochee River Water Trail to become the first river named a National Water Trail.
Beginning in 2008, the Friends of Chattahoochee Bend organization began hosting work days to aid in the development of the park. The park was opened to the public on July 1, 2011. It was the first new state park to open since Tallulah Gorge State Park in 1993. [3]
It is a tributary of the Chattahoochee River, and near its end it is the centerpiece of Sweetwater Creek State Park. Sweetwater Creek was named after AmaKanasta (Sweet Water), a Cherokee chieftain. In 1936, the Chattahoochee was organized into two Ranger Districts, the Blue Ridge and the Tallulah. In 1959, President Dwight D. Eisenhower proclaimed 96,000 acres (388 km 2) of federal lands in central Georgia as the Oconee National Forest. The Oconee then joined the Chattahoochee to become the Chattahoochee–Oconee National Forests of today.
Upper Chattahoochee Riverkeeper was founded in 1994 [2] by Laura Turner Seydel and Rutherford Seydel. Modeling the Chattahoochee program after New York's aggressive and successful Hudson Riverkeeper, they sought to create a focused environmental advocacy initiative led by professional staff and committed volunteers.
