The Hager House and Museum in Hagerstown City Park was once home to the city's founder, Jonathan Hager.. In 1739, Jonathan Hager, a German immigrant from Pennsylvania and a volunteer Captain of Scouts, purchased 200 acres (81 ha) of land in the Great Appalachian Valley between the Blue Ridge and Allegheny Mountains in Maryland and called it Hager's Fancy.
In 1877, the site was opened as an amusement park and resort area by the Western Maryland Railway (WM). [1] During the summer months the railroad offered frequent train service on its "Blue Mountain Express" from Baltimore to Pen Mar. [2]: 244–6 The WM also ran trains from Hagerstown, Maryland, to Pen Mar. [3]
The growth of the park naturally led to the growth of the village of Pen Mar. The town of Pen Mar was officially incorporated in 1920 [5] with an act to add new sections to Article 22 of the code of public laws of Maryland. The town had a post office, many hotels and over 100 boarding houses during this time of growth.
Hagerstown Commercial Core Historic District is a national historic district at Hagerstown, Washington County, Maryland, United States. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.
