New Gods: Nezha Reborn (Chinese: 新神榜：哪吒重生) is a 2021 Chinese 3D animated fantasy action film directed by Zhao Ji and written by Mu Chuan, based on the character of Nezha from the Ming dynasty novel Investiture of the Gods.
The film is based on the character of Yang Jian from the Ming dynasty novel Investiture of the Gods, [2] and was released on August 19, 2022, as a prequel to the 2021 film, New Gods: Nezha Reborn. [3] [4] The film's distribution rights in North America was bought by GKIDS who also produced an English dub of the film. [5]
In New Gods: Nezha Reborn, Li Yunxiang (who is the reincarnation of Nezha) meets with a masked man who he believes is the Six-Eared Macaque, who turns out to be the legendary Sun Wukong and offers to teach him how to control his powers to fight against Ao Bing and his father the Dragon of the East Ao Guang.
The film was released on DVD with the original Chinese audio English subtitles in 2005, with Nezha Conquers the Dragon King as its English title. [9] The original-language version of the film was premiered in the UK and Ireland in its 2K digital restoration [10] in an online Chinese Cinema Season which ran from 12 February to 12 May 2021. [11]
The revised story tells the tale of young god Nezha who is reborn as Li Yunxiang, a young daredevil delivery courier, some 3,000 years after the story’s original setting and the Battle of the Gods.
Ziya leaves with the scroll and is joined by nephew-disciples Nezha and Yang Jian. They are pursued by Shen Gongbao, an alchemist and Ziya's rival, and Crown Prince Yin Jiao and Ji Fa. They encounter Ji Chang, Ji Fa's father and the Duke of the West, who is travelling to the capital Zhaoge to greet the new king.
