It is part of the "Grand Forks, ND-MN Metropolitan Statistical Area" or "Greater Grand Forks". According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 8.1 square miles (21 km 2), all land. [4] As of the census [5] of 2000, there were 4,832 people, 1,279 households, and 1,230 families residing on the base.
The 321st Strategic Missile Wing was the sixth, and last United States Air Force LGM-30 Minuteman ICBM wing. In 1962, the Air Force announced that the Grand Forks AFB would be first to deploy the new LGM-30F Minuteman II missile (The previous deployments were all Minuteman I).
In 1962 and 1963 150 missiles were deployed to silos controlled by three squadrons of 455th in North Dakota. On 25 June 1968 the 91st Bombardment Wing was reassigned to Minot AFB from Glasgow AFB , Montana which was closed and assumed control of the three Minuteman squadrons of the 455th.
The B/CDB capsules were upgraded to REACT-B in the mid-1990s and used only at the 321st Missile Wing at Grand Forks AFB, ND and the 564th Missile Squadron (the "odd squad") of the 341st Missile Wing at Malmstrom AFB, MT until both were shut down. (19 August 1998 for the 564th, 30 September 1998 for the 321st.)
The 18th Airborne Command and Control Squadron was activated at Robins Air Force Base, Georgia, on 10 February 2023 and assigned to the 319th Reconnaissance Wing at Grand Forks Air Force Base, North Dakota.
