As Walmart celebrates the 62nd anniversary of its first store opening on July 2, 1962, let's take a look back at the early beginnings of one of the world's largest retailers.
The supercenter concept features everything contained in an average Walmart discount store, in addition to a tire and oil change shop, optical center, one-hour photo processing lab, portrait studio, and numerous alcove shops such as banks, cellular telephone stores, hair and nail salons, video rental stores, and fast-food outlets.
Walmart Inc. (/ ˈ w ɔː l m ɑːr t / ⓘ; formerly Wal-Mart Stores, Inc.) is an American multinational retail corporation that operates a chain of hypermarkets (also called supercenters), discount department stores, and grocery stores in the United States and 23 other countries. It is headquartered in Bentonville, Arkansas. [11]
Walmart may have been the latest, but it won't be the last. "It's pretty clear that we're at a moment in history when the pendulum is beginning to swing back in the other direction," Kleinbaum said.
As the Supercenter proved to be a much more profitable experiment, Walmart renamed the stores "Wal-Mart's Hypermart USA" in April 1990, and eventually began either converting them to Supercenter operations or closing them. As of 2023, two of the former Hypermart USA locations still operate as Walmarts while the other two have been demolished.
