Central Papua, officially the Central Papua Province (Indonesian: Provinsi Papua Tengah) is an Indonesian province located in the central region of Western New Guinea. [ 7 ] [ 8 ] It was formally established on 11 November 2022 from the former eight western regencies of the province of Papua .
The province of Central Papua (Provinsi Papua Tengah) in Indonesia is divided into eight kabupaten which in turn are divided administratively into districts, known as distrik under the law of 2001 on "special autonomy for Papua province".
Included in this new legislation was the provision to create new provinces, and in July 2022 new national legislation split South Papua, Central Papua, Highland Papua from Papua [11] through Law Number 14 of 2022, Law Number 15 of 2022, and Law Number 16 of 2022 respectively. [8]
The districts of Papua (as now reduced by the reorganisation of July 2022, which separated twenty regencies previously part of Papua Province into three new provinces of Central Papua, Highland Papua and South Papua) and their respective regencies are as follows (as of December 2019).
