Carterville is a city in Williamson County, Illinois, United States. At the 2020 census, the city's population was 5,848. The city is part of the Carbondale-Marion-Herrin combined statistical area and has grown considerably as a residential community of Carbondale and Marion. The city is located next to Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge.
After passing through Carbondale, IL 13 then proceeds to pass through Carterville, Crainville, and Herrin. It then intersects IL 148 southwest of the Veterans Airport of Southern Illinois. In Marion, it then meets I-57 at a SPUI and then IL 37 at a signalized intersection. Beyond that, IL 13 intersects IL 166 in between Marion and Crab Orchard.
Williamson County is included in the Carbondale-Marion, IL Metropolitan Statistical Area. This area of Southern Illinois is known locally as "Little Egypt". [citation needed] Williamson is in the Metro Lakeland area, 88 miles (142 km) southeast of St. Louis, Missouri.
