Philip and Son (also Philip & Son) was a shipbuilder in Kingswear, near Dartmouth, Devon, England. Operating from 1858 until the late 1990s, the company provided employment opportunities for nearly 141 years for many people of Dartmouth. [ 1 ]
The ship was built in 1949 by Philip & Son of Dartmouth, Devon, UK as the MV Berry Castle for the River Dart Steamboat Co Ltd (RDSC). She was named after Berry Pomeroy Castle, which is located a few miles from the River Dart and was the third vessel in the fleet to bear the name.
Edmund Gardner was built by Philip and Son, of Dartmouth, and was launched on 9 July 1953. She was completed and entered service on the Mersey on 2 December 1953. Her function was to serve as a floating base for pilots guiding ships into and out of the Mersey.

The vessel was built in 1912 in Dartmouth as The Aberfoyle [a] for passenger service across Lough Swilly, Ireland by the Lough Swilly Steamboat Company. She was sold to the Admiralty for use as a tender in 1920, and was later deployed at HMS Dolphin , the submarine base at Gosport, taking that name.
HMAS Teal paid off on 14 August 1970. Teal was sold to Ian and Gary Baker, Tasmania.The vessel was transported to Tasmania where she was later sold. In 1994 Teal became a research and training ship for the maritime faculties of Near East University and the University of Kyrenia, in Northern Cyprus. [4]
