This poison must be harvested from a dead or incapacitated giant poisonous snake. A creature subjected to this poison must succeed on a DC 11 Constitution saving throw, taking 10 (3d6) poison damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.
There is no Giant Poisonous Snake conjured by the spell, only a fey spirit which takes the form of one. It's not a snake, it's a snake-resembling spirit. Extending that logic, there is no Serpent Venom either, properly speaking, but instead a specific manifestation of the fey spirit which is shaped by the spell.
The build revolves around utilizing our Giant Poisonous Snake companion as (1) a damage source in combat and (2) a farming source for Serpent Venom. There are three big obstacles to making this work: keeping our snake alive, farming the poison itself, and keeping our ammo coated in poison during combat. 1: Keeping our snake alive.
The cost of giant snake venom (200 gp) is attributable more to the danger of harvesting the venom (can poison yourself pretty easily) and the limited market for the venom than to the cost of the snake. Asleep = unconscious, which absolutely includes "incapacitated" per 5E status rules. Weekly intervals sounds fine. Could potentially be less.
Re: Snake/Serpant themed character 5e. Spore Druid seems like it would be a good fit for this theming. You would need to do a little re-fluffing for the main ability, but you can get poison damage easily, you can summon snakes, and you can turn into a snake. A character can instead attempt to harvest poison from a poisonous creature, such as a snake, wyvern, or carrion crawler. The creature must be incapacitated or dead, and the harvesting requires 1d6 minutes followed by a DC 20 Intelligence (Nature) check. Besides, in a straight combat comparison the Giant Poisonous Snake wins anyway. The Giant Poisonous Snake deals 5 more base damage (with the same to hit and AC), deals only 2 less poison damage on a successful save (and thus 4 more total damage) and deals 3 more damage on a failed save (thus 9 more total damage).
Removed Giant Poisonous Snake from the unstable tunnel; Removed the DC 10 Acrobatics check to avoid triggering the collapse instead only DC 10 Acrobatics if players attempt to climb. In the flood section, changed the effect to 1d6+prone from 2d6+prone. In the den, enemies changed from 5 goblins + 2 goblin bosses to 5 goblins + 1 goblin boss.
The regular, "un-prone" postures for a snake are coiled, sidewinding or "zig-zagged". In these postures, the snake can move or attack (or possibly even evade) efficiently and fast. The head (and, for a rattlesnake, also the tail) may be elevated. The prone posture would be a position in which the snake's ability to move is impeded.
Large beast, unaligned. So it meets the Beast requirements, but its CR of 3 exceeds the maximum challenge rating of 1 for an 8th level druid. So you can't Wild Shape into a Giant Scorpion. However, a Giant Poisonous Snake is CR ¼, so you can Wild Shape into this creature if you seen it before and are at least 2nd level.
