Named for its founding location, Olivet, Illinois, ONU was originally established as a grammar school in east-central Illinois in 1907. In the late 1930s, it moved to the campus in Bourbonnais.

Bourbonnais Township was formerly a township of Will County until Kankakee County was created in 1853. Geography [ edit ] According to the 2010 census, the township has a total area of 42.61 square miles (110.4 km 2 ), of which 42.25 square miles (109.4 km 2 ) (or 99.16%) is land and 0.37 square miles (0.96 km 2 ) (or 0.87%) is water.

The first lord of the Bourbonnais known by name was Adhémar (or Aymon I of Bourbon ). Aymon's father was Aymar (894-953), sire of Souvigny , his only son with Ermengarde [ clarification needed ] . Aymar lived during the reign of Charles the Simple who, in 913, gave him fiefs on the river Allier in which would become the Bourbonnais.
