The earliest members of the Greek Orthodox faith resident in Steubenville had no church building; some were members of the Holy Trinity parish, which worshipped on the upper floors of commercial buildings, while others crossed the Ohio River to Weirton for worship, [3] even though both the Fort Steuben Bridge and the Market Street Bridge charged tolls at the time. Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church is a historic Greek Orthodox church building near downtown Steubenville. Built in 1914, it was formerly home to a Methodist congregation and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. [35] Steubenville contained approximately 300 Jewish families in 1950s; the city's last synagogue closed in 2013. [36]

The first Catholic church in Steubenville, St. Peter's, was dedicated in 1835. [ 3 ] In 1868, Pope Pius IX erected the Diocese of Columbus , encompassing the portions of Ohio "...lying south of 40' and 41" and between the Ohio River on the East and the Scioto River on the West together with the Counties of Franklin, Delaware and Morrow."
