The General Post Office is a colonial-era building situated on 141 King William Street on the north-west corner of King William Street and Victoria Square. It is the former General Post Office for South Australia. Postal services operated from the building between 6 May 1872 and 11 October 2019.
The department was administered by the postmaster-general. The first permanent secretary of the department was Sir Robert Townley Scott, who held office from 1 July 1901 until his retirement on 31 December 1910. In its first 25 years, the department grew from 6,000 to 10,000 offices and from 18,000 to 47,000 staff. [2]

Upper Hermitage's history revolves around agriculture and viticulture, as well as sand and freestone quarries, whose yields were used since early settlement days to build many South Australian public buildings, including the Adelaide Town Hall, General Post Office, Supreme Court and St Peter's Cathedral.
The classical structure was designed by Edmund Wright, whose works include the Adelaide Town Hall and Adelaide General Post Office on King William Street. [14] The hall sits on Moseley Square, just off the beach. The Holdfast Bay city council acquired the hall in 1887. [13] Today it houses a museum, tourist information centre and restaurants. [14]
