But with fast, low-damage weapons like the Minishark and Bee Gun, this really makes a difference.
Keep in mind that the shark tooth necklace (and stinger necklace) are pre-hardmode items. 5 defense and approximately a 7% damage boost is pretty good for a pre-hardmode item, especially because bees are already a powerful source of damage that has low base damage (making the damage boost even better).

Shark Tooth Necklace increases damage by 3 and almost every preHardmode weapon doesn't go above 30 base damage. There are exacly three things that have above 40 damage and get a "small" benefit from it: Flamelash, Flower of Fire, Night's Edge and Molten Fury with Ammo included.

The Shark Tooth Necklace combination could be pretty interesting though, as one reduces defence for the enemies while the other increases defence for the player. Given how useful an extra 2.5 damage can go, especially in higher difficulties, I can see why some people wouldn't agree with such a combination though.
