She was elected President of the American Folklore Society in 1949 and also elected as a Fellow of the Society in 1961. James did not publish many articles based on urban folklore. A paper of hers, "European Folklore Found in A Modern City", was read in her absence at the Western Folklore Conference in 1945.

Goldstein, was the chairman of the folklore department at the University of Pennsylvania, an influential figure in the folklore field, having worked during the folk revival movement of the 1960s; the dissemination of his text, A Guide for Fieldworkers in Folklore, which was published in 1964 [1] is considered a standard in the profession.
