[3] The county is named for Norborne Berkeley, 4th Baron Botetourt, who served as governor of the colony of Virginia from 1768 to 1770, when he died suddenly while in office.

It features a complex slate -covered hipped roof with projecting, pedimented gables, and a one-story wraparound porch.
The Reynolds Property is a historic country property at 514 Rocky Road in rural northeastern Botetourt County, Virginia.It consists of 150 acres (61 ha) that are now mainly woodlands, with prominent limestone outcrops, and is located opposite an active limestone quarry.
Lauderdale takes its name from the eighteenth century owner of the property, James Lauderdale Sr. Lauderdale purchased 366 acres on Looney Mill Creek in 1749. By the early 1780s, he owned over a thousand acres in Botetourt County, and in 1785 he was listed as the owner of a dwelling and three other buildings.
Slave labor made all the original structure's bricks on the property; the front was built in the Flemish bond style, the sides and rear in stretcher bond style. In 1906, about a decade after the property was purchased by the Pechin family from near Cleveland, Ohio, a two-story east wing and front porch were added in American bond style and painted.
