The hotel was opened by Ken McCulloch in 1986 [3] in Number One, although it has since expanded to occupy all five houses, Number Four being the last acquired. [4] The hotel now has forty-nine bedrooms, [ 5 ] and in 2006 was acquired by the Hotel du Vin chain, which also operates Malmaison hotels.
The name "Hotel du Vin" was a reference to Basset's wine expertise. At the time Basset was a Master Sommelier ; he went on to become a Master of Wine (1998). KSL Capital Partners purchased the Hotel du Vin chain and the Malmaison hotel chain early in 2013, before selling both hotel brands to Frasers Hospitality for £363m in 2015.
Malmaison Edinburgh was the first hotel in the chain to open. Malmaison was founded by Scottish hotelier Ken McCulloch in 1994 in collaboration with hotel group Arcadian International. The first hotel opened in Leith, Edinburgh, with a second opening in Glasgow a month later. [1]
