The body of an American mountaineer has been discovered by a pair of fellow US climbers 22 years after he went missing following an avalanche in the Peruvian Andes.
On July 9th, 2024, it was reported that the body of William Stampfl, an American mountaineer, had been found 22 years after he disappeared in an avalanche in June 2002. [13] The body of one of Stampfl's climbing companions had previously been recovered. A third member of the group is still unaccounted for. [14]
Stampfl was a great proponent of the interval style of training where athletes run high-intensity distance trials followed by short recovery periods. An example could be 12 repetitions of 400 metres with a 200-metre jog between each. Stampfl had a great rivalry with Percy Cerutty who coached the middle-distance running champion Herb Elliott.
