Te Reo (language), deals with language policy and how the schools can 'best advance the language learning of their children'. Ngā Iwi (people), focuses on 'the social agencies which influence the development of children, in short, all those people with whom they interact as they make sense of their world and find their rightful place within it'.
Durie is a Māori educationalist. She was appointed head of Te Uru Māraurau, the Māori and Multicultural Education School at Massey University, in 1997. [3] [6] Durie and Huia Jahnke were responsible for creating the curriculum for the first graduate immersion course in te reo Māori, the teacher education degree programme Te Aho Tātairangi.
Te Kura o Otangarei is a coeducational full primary (years 1-8) school with a decile rating of 1 [10] and 98 students as of November 2024. [11] It opened in 1955 as Otangarei Primary School and opened its full immersion Māori language unit in 1996. It expanded to include year 7 and 8 students in 2004, and adopted its current name in 2006. [12]
