The Texas Hill Country AVA is an American Viticultural Area located in the Texas Hill Country north of San Antonio and west of Austin, Texas. [3] The appellation is the third largest American Viticultural Area in geographic area behind the Upper Mississippi River Valley AVA and Ohio River Valley AVA, covering an area of over 9,000,000 acres (14,062 sq mi).
It was the fifth designated wine area in the state of Texas, and covers an area of over 32,000 acres (129 km 2). [3] There are no wineries located in the Escondido Valley AVA. The largest winery making Escondido Valley AVA designated wines was Ste. Genevieve Wines, whose winery facilities were located near Fort Stockton . [ 5 ]

TPWD also had the property designated as a Texas State Antiquities Landmark in 1983. On January 1, 2008, the site was transferred from TPWD to the Texas Historical Commission, which completed a two-year renovation and historic preservation project in December 2015. Tours, programs, and special events are offered regularly for visitors to the site.
