Blood glucose monitoring is the use of a glucose meter for testing the concentration of glucose in the blood ().Particularly important in diabetes management, a blood glucose test is typically performed by piercing the skin (typically, via fingerstick) to draw blood, then applying the blood to a chemically active disposable 'test-strip'.
A continuous glucose monitor (CGM) is a device used for monitoring blood glucose on a continual basis instead of monitoring glucose levels periodically by drawing a drop of blood from a finger. This is known as continuous glucose monitoring .
The cost of home blood glucose monitoring can be substantial due to the cost of the test strips. In 2006, the US cost to consumers of each glucose strip ranged from about US$ 0.35 to $1.00. Manufacturers often provide meters at no cost to encourage use of the profitable test strips.
continuous glucose monitor - the CGM monitors the glucose levels every 5 minutes approximately. Laboratory tests are often used to diagnose illnesses and such methods include fasting blood sugar (FBS), fasting plasma glucose (FPG): 10–16 hours after eating [1] glucose tolerance test: [2] continuous testing
The test works by taking a small blood sample of blood using a lancet (a sterile pointed needle) to prick a finger (Image 1). The blood droplet is usually collected at the bottom of a test strip, while the other end is inserted in the glucose meter. [6] The drop of blood is drawn into the meter and can directly measure the glucose in the sample.
Dexcom was founded in 1999 by Scott Glenn, John Burd, Lauren Otsuki, Ellen Preston and Bret Megargel. [3] [4] In 2006, Dexcom received U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval and launched the Dexcom STS Continuous Glucose Monitoring System, which is a three-day sensor that provides up to 288 glucose measurements for every 24 hours.
