Noble was a Civil War veteran who moved to California in 1865 and was a member of the San Francisco Stock Exchange prior to founding Cypress Lawn. [2]: 15 On March 9, 1892, Noble was granted a permit to establish a non-sectarian cemetery [3] and plans for Cypress Lawn were made public as work had begun on a mortuary chapel and receiving vault. Forest Lawn Memorial Park was founded in 1906 as a not-for-profit cemetery by a group of businessmen from San Francisco. Hubert Eaton and C.B. Sims entered into a sales contract with the cemetery in 1912. Eaton took over its management in 1917.
