The flag of Detroit. The government of Detroit, Michigan is run by a mayor, the nine-member Detroit City Council, the eleven-member Board of Police Commissioners, and a clerk. All of these officers are elected on a nonpartisan ballot, with the exception of four of the police commissioners, who are appointed by the mayor.
Albert Cobo began his career as Detroit's mayor in 1949 after defeating Liberal Common Council member George Edwards. Edwards, an activist for the United Automobile Workers (UAW), public housing administrator and democratic proponent of the New Deal represented Cobo’s antithesis.
Michael Edward Duggan (born July 15, 1958) [1] is an American lawyer, businessman, and politician serving as the 75th mayor of Detroit, Michigan since 2014. An Independent, Duggan previously served as the Wayne County Prosecutor from 2001 to 2004, and as the deputy county executive of Wayne County from 1987 to 2001.
Kwame Malik Kilpatrick (born June 8, 1970) is an American former politician and convicted felon who served as the 72nd mayor of Detroit from 2002 to 2008. A member of the Democratic Party, he previously represented the 9th district in the Michigan House of Representatives from 1997 to 2002.

The breakdown of mayoral political parties is 38 Democrats , 9 Republicans , and 3 Independents (two elected with state Democratic support).
