Joseph Patrick Riley Jr. (born January 19, 1943) is an American politician who served as the 60th mayor of Charleston, South Carolina from 1975 to 2016. A member of the Democratic Party, he also served in the South Carolina House of Representatives from 1968 to 1974 and was the 44th President of the United States Conference of Mayors from 1986 to 1987.
Riley served as a curate at St. Joseph's Church in Roxbury (1929–31) and earned a Doctor of Philosophy degree from the Catholic University of Louvain in 1933. [1] He taught philosophy and moral theology at St. John's Seminary for eleven years, then serving as vice-rector (1944–51) and rector (1951–58) of the seminary. [1]

[1] [2] Born in Falls Church, Virginia, Riley was employed at the Smithsonian Institution from 1896 until his death, becoming Associate Curator of the Division of Birds in 1932. [2] A species of Bahamian iguana, Cyclura rileyi, is named in his honor. [3]

Joseph A. Riley (December 14, 1923– October 25, 1976) was an American ice hockey player. He was born in Medford, Massachusetts. Riley helped lead Dartmouth College to two Frozen Fours during his career. He was inducted into the United States Hockey Hall of Fame in 2002. His brothers John and Bill are also in the USHOF.
