It is the only university in the southern region of Sri Lanka (also referred to as the Kingdom of Ruhuna). It was established by a special presidential decree on 1 September 1978 [ 4 ] as Ruhuna University College and upgraded to a full-fledged university on 1 February 1984 by a university order .
The faculty has the largest student intake of the university. Currently, the faculty caters to 16,337 students. The students get selected to the faculty based on their performance at the General Certificate Examination (Advanced Level) of the relevant year. The selection is done by the University Grants Commission of Sri Lanka.

The University of Ceylon was the only university in Sri Lanka (earlier Ceylon) from 1942 until 1972. It had several constituent campuses at various locations around Sri Lanka. The University of Ceylon Act No. 1 of 1972, replaced it with the University of Sri Lanka which existed from 1973 to 1978.
The IUSF is the organization that is given leadership to whole university students in Sri Lanka. [10] It is the largest student organization in Sri Lanka to date. It represents the voice of student councils and action committees in 15 higher education institutes including all major universities and technical colleges in Sri Lanka. [11]

Susirith Mendis is a Sri Lankan physician and academic. He was the Vice-Chancellor of University of Ruhuna for six years and was the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine. He is a Professor of Physiology and founder Director of the Staff Development Centre.
