The Hawaiian monk seal (Neomonachus schauinslandi) is an endangered species of earless seal native to the Hawaiian Islands. It is one of two extant monk seal species; the other is the Mediterranean monk seal. A third species, the Caribbean monk seal, is extinct.
The Hawaiian monk seal is therefore considered a single stock. Scheel et al. (2014) established a new genus, Neomonachus, comprising the Caribbean and Hawaiian monk seals, based upon molecular and skull morphology evidence.
