The cause of spinal tumors is unknown. Most extradural tumors are metastatic commonly from breast, prostate, lung, and kidney cancer. [4] There are many genetic factors associated with intradural tumors, most commonly neurofibromatosis 1 (NF1), neurofibromatosis 2 (NF2), and Von-Hippel Lindau (VHL) syndrome. [1]
The most common causes of cord compression are tumors, but abscesses and granulomas (e.g. in tuberculosis) are equally capable of producing the syndrome. Tumors that commonly cause cord compression are lung cancer (non-small cell type), breast cancer, prostate cancer, renal cell carcinoma, thyroid cancer, lymphoma and multiple myeloma.
In severe cases, such tumors may even cause wallowing and abnormal eye movements. Tumors located in the lower part of the cerebrum near the primary visual cortex can cause blurred vision, double vision, or loss of vision. Tumors located in the spinal cord usually have symptoms that start with back pain that spreads towards the arms or legs.
Treatment of spinal nerve sheath tumors typically depends on presence and severity of symptoms. [1] For asymptomatic or incidental schwannomas or neurofibromas, only continued imaging is typically indicated to assess whether tumor growth is occurring. [ 1 ]
Once the spinal injury has occurred, one of two things may happen. Firstly, hemorrhaging within the spinal cord may cause compression, which damages the spinal cord even further. Another consequence of myelomalacia is improper circulation of blood to the area damaged, resulting in further damage to the spinal cord. [citation needed]
