The third generation of the Ford Thunderbird is a personal luxury car produced by Ford for the 1961 to 1963 model years. It featured new and much sleeker styling (done by Bill Boyer) [3] than the second generation models. Sales were strong, if not quite up to record-breaking 1960, at 73,051 including 10,516 convertibles.
1963 Ford Thunderbird hardtop. The Thunderbird was redesigned for 1961 with styling that gave the car a futuristic bullet-like body-side appearance. A new engine, the 390 cu in (6.4 L) FE V8, was the standard and only engine initially offered in the Thunderbird. It was rated at 300 hp (224 kW) and was mated to a three-speed automatic transmission.
Named for the 1962 Ford Taunus V4 engine and Ford Cologne V6 engine built in Cologne, Germany. 1.2/1.3/1.5/1.7L were mostly in European Cars. 1.8, 2.0/2.3 had the same bellhousings bolt patterns with differences from year to year to be wary of.

It was used in the Ford Thunderbird, 1959-60 Edsel, Mercury, and some high-end Ford cars. The Ford version was the P-code "Thunderbird V8", which for cars equipped with a manual transmission had a compression ratio of 8.1:1 and was rated at 193 bhp (144 kW) at 4,400 rpm and with 280 lb⋅ft (380 N⋅m) at 2,600 rpm.
