According to the 2010 census, Swansea has a total area of 6.434 square miles (16.66 km 2), of which 6.26 square miles (16.21 km 2) (or 97.3%) is land and 0.174 square miles (0.45 km 2) (or 2.7%) is water. [3] Swansea is largely flat and runs primarily in a north–south direction along the Illinois route 159 corridor.

[2]The Cadw/ICOMOS Register of Parks and Gardens of Special Historic Interest in Wales was established in 2002 and given statutory status in 2022.
The district covers about 27 acres (11 ha), and includes 11 primary buildings, and two sites: that of the shipyard, and that of the house of the area's first settler, the Rev. John Myles. The oldest surviving building in the district is the c. 1750 house of Jonathan Barney at 166 Old Providence Road.
