A rural municipality (RM) is a type of incorporated municipality in the Canadian province of Manitoba. [1] Under the province's Municipal Act of 1997, an area must have a minimum population of 1,000 and a density of less than 400 inhabitants per square kilometre (1,000/sq mi) to incorporate as a rural municipality. [2]
In 1921, the RM of Assiniboia was partitioned, wherein it maintained its rural parts while its more urban area was incorporated as the Rural Municipality of St. James. [ 5 ] [ 6 ] [ 12 ] The first council for the RM of St. James met that year, with J. W. Godkin as reeve . [ 15 ]
In 2015, it was renamed Charleswood—St. James—Assiniboia—Headingley but there was no boundary changes following the 2012 Canadian federal electoral redistribution. Following the 2022 Canadian federal electoral redistribution, this riding will be renamed Winnipeg West at the first election held after April 22, 2024.
