Thelymitra ixioides, known as the spotted sun orchid [2] or dotted sun orchid, [3] is a species of orchid that is native to southern and eastern Australia and to New Zealand. It has a single long, thin, dark green leaf and up to ten flowers which occur in a range of colours, most commonly blue to purple but usually with small, dark blue spots.
This is the largest-flowered orchid species in Europe, growing to 60 cm tall [5] with flowers as wide as 9 cm. [6] Before it flowers, it is distinguished from other orchids by the large size and width of its ovate leaves (as big as 18 cm long, 9 cm wide), [5] which like other orchids exhibit parallel venation.
The orchid's labellum is similar in shape and scent to a flightless female thynnid wasp. Although the species was formally described in 1842, the description was often later overlooked and other hammer orchids were given the name Drakea livida. It is now known to be, along with Drakaea glyptodon, one of the most widespread of the genus.
