Thomas Howard Kean Jr. (/ ˈ k eɪ n / KAYN; [1] born September 5, 1968) is an American politician serving as the U.S. representative from New Jersey's 7th congressional district since 2023. He represented New Jersey's 21st legislative district in the New Jersey Senate from 2003 to 2022, serving as minority leader from 2008 to 2022.
Kean was born in New York City to a long line of Dutch Americans and New Jersey politicians. His mother was Elizabeth Stuyvesant Howard [2] and his father, Robert Kean, was a U.S. representative from 1939 until 1959. [3] Kean's grandfather Hamilton Fish Kean and great-uncle John Kean both served as U.S. senators from New Jersey.
