The movie was based on a book with the same title, written by Betty Mahmoody and William Hoffer and based on Betty's version of events. The screenplay was written by David W. Rintels. The film was directed by Brian Gilbert and filmed in Israel, at GG Studios in Neve Ilan and Atlanta [2] during the summer of 1990.
The movie features five storylines, presented out of order, with some events revisited from different viewpoints. Nasri, a young Israeli Arab boy from Jaffa's Ajami neighborhood, narrates the film. In the first chapter, Nasri's neighbor, a teenager, is killed in a drive-by shooting intended for Nasri's brother, Omar, who sold the victim his car.
