It was created by producer Carol Rosenstein and director Bruce Gowers of Together Again Video Productions. The duo had produced and directed over 100 music videos for Warner Bros. Records and took their idea of music videos for children to the record label. Warner Brothers funded the first video, "A Day at Old MacDonald's Farm".
"Old MacDonald Had a Farm" (sometimes shortened to Old MacDonald) is a traditional children's song and nursery rhyme about a farmer and the various animals he keeps. Each verse of the song changes the name of the animal and its respective noise. For example, if the verse uses a cow as the animal, then "moo" would be used as the animal's sound.
Tim takes the lead on most songs. "Old MacDonald" and "Bobby Shaftoe" are given country-and-western treatments. John Kirkpatrick takes the lead vocals on "Little Bo Peep". Melanie Harold leads on "Bobby Shaftoe". The album was released on the Music for Pleasure label. Another similar album was released in 1983, called "The Drunken Sailor".

It shows the artist's impression of the song "Old MacDonald Had a Farm", with the central white farmhouse on a hill overlooking the various barns that house the animals and farmhands working the fields. To the right is a haystack with children playing.
The cartoon takes its title from the children's song "Old MacDonald Had a Farm" that Donald sings while feeding his animals. Later on, while milking Clementine, Donald sings also the American folk ballad "Oh My Darling, Clementine". In addition, "Turkey in the Straw" is used as background music, as in Steamboat Willie and The Band Concert.

In the early to mid-1980s, the Kidsongs Kids recorded a different version of this song for A Day at Old MacDonald's Farm. In the mid-1990s, a Major League Baseball ad campaign featured versions of the song performed by musicians of several different genres.
