The Conemaugh River is a 70-mile (110 km) tributary of the Kiskiminetas River in Westmoreland, Indiana, and Cambria counties in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania. [2] The name means 'Otter Creek', originating from the Unami-Lenape language word kwənəmuxkw 'otter'.
An estimated 14.3 million tons of water from Lake Conemaugh were released, wreaking devastation along the valley of South Fork Creek and the Little Conemaugh River and the dozen miles downstream to Johnstown, Pennsylvania. It was the worst disaster in U.S. history at the time.
Blacklick Creek is a tributary of the Conemaugh River, approximately 30 mi (48 km) long, in western Pennsylvania in the United States. [1] It rises in two forks in western Cambria County, on the western side of the Allegheny Mountains. The North Branch, approximately 12 mi (19 km) long, rises north of Colver and flows west, then southwest.
The township was originally included as part of the larger Armstrong township in Westmoreland County on March 12, 1800. The Pennsylvania legislature established Indiana County on March 30, 1803 and concurrently formed Conemaugh township from part of Armstrong township, however Indiana County was not legally organized until November 3, 1806 and Conemaugh township not organized until 1807 [5].
The Kiskiminetas River is formed at Saltsburg, on the border between Westmoreland and Indiana counties, by the confluence of the Conemaugh River and Loyalhanna Creek.It flows northwest in a meandering course past Avonmore, Apollo, Vandergrift, Hyde Park and Leechburg.
